When Sewing Goes Bad

I was busy sewing along on my serger when suddenly a section of already-serged fabric somehow popped over the cutter and bent the heck out of my needle. Can you see that? It was so loud and unexpected, it scared me to death.

Thankfully, it was a quick remedy. Well, the replacing of the needle was quick. Having to re-thread and make sure everything else was okay took longer.

Have you had any moments when sewing has gone bad?

Umm..well, first there was the time I was making Baby Legs out of fuzzy socks, and something got hooked over something else....and I ended up nearly breaking my auto-threader off.

And then there was the time I was sewing an apron and had to stitch over the same section three times because I never actually matched the pieces up, so I wasn't actually sewing them together...

Sewing Gone Bad could be the name of my Lifetime Movie!

Ha ha, that's funny you should ask, right after I posted this last night:
http://somethingsclever.blogspot.com/2009/04/wordless-wednesday-sewing-project-gone.html

It's really not as bad as it looks, since I would finish up the top and sleeves later, but I just made it too skinny. Not following the pattern and all that.

I'm currently finishing up the new version and it's turning out much better. :)

p.s. love your blog and you are an excellent sewer (seamstress?)

I know that scary noise! I have sewn over pins, zippers, buttons etc and heard that shocking noise. Of course, my needle usually breaks. A bent needle is pretty special!

My Mum always told me the cautionary tale of when she sewed through her finger with the sewing machine as a teenager. She was the only one home and had a needle sicking out of her finger so she found some pliers, pulled it out, bandaged her finger and continued sewing. I have always been very careful!

Any time I have to thread and rethread my serger is "sewing gone bad!" I always have to do it more than once to solve the problem.

what aunt lolo said happened to me exactly! bent my needle over like 90 degrees! silly me I tried it again and broke the next one right off!! my serger and I are still getting to know one another but my singer and I know each other very well and hate each other completely. so every sewing day is a sewing gone bad day.isnt that sad?

My aunt advised to me always wear glasses when sewing. The first time she wore glasses for safety purposes, her needle broke off, flew up and hit her glasses! My sewing stories usually involve my tension setting - why can I never get it right??!

Daily!!! My machine is always breaking needles on me, no matter how many times I defluff it and oil it. I nearly threw it out the window the other week, but then realised that I have NO cash for a much better one!

Its most frustrating when that happen. I am surprised you make time for sewing. I am pregnant with my first child and I already fear I may have no time for all this once the baby is born.

I was putting in a zipper when the needle broke and went into my eye! Luckily it only burst a few small blood vessels. Now I wear safety goggles when I sew!
