Corners of My Home




















Our old house has no storage. This is a picture of our first-floor bathroom. We use an old wooden cabinet to store necessities and to display some vintage and old-fashioned soaps. The Ivory soap bar was purchased at a flea market for 50 cents, along with the thimble. There is Porter's Salve in the back. My grandmother used to use that for every skin ailment. Ugh... the smell! (The little brown bar of soap in the lower left is some of my handmade chocolate peanut butter soap.)

Cute bathroom.

For an old home, that's a pretty large bathroom. Ours are so small, if you put your arms out you'd touch opposite walls.

It wasn't this large when we bought the house. This bathroom was actually a bathroom, small foyer (house was broken down into 2 apartments when we bought it) and part of another room. It's long and narrow. I was standing on the outside.

Reusable Swiffer WetJet Cloths

I promised myself that, when I bought a box of Swiffer WetJet refills at the wholesale club, it would be the last box I bought. Something had to be done. Now, to be honest, part of the reason was to help the environment, but the other part was because I was tired of running out of those darn things. I took some towels, folded them in half cut them into 5" widths. (The towel was just about 25" or so from side to side when flat.) Then I cut two 5" pieces of elastic and serged it all together. Two layers of toweling and two elastic strips. That's it. (The finished piece was approximately 4.75" x 12.") Within minutes I had a stack of eight. Slide them on and mop away. You will have a clean floor and have saved one more thing from ending up in the landfill. Now, if I can just do something about the cleaning liquid ... Something environmentally-friendly, economical, and won't cause further pain to my arthritic back.

Thrifted Chair

Before ... a $10 thrifted chair ... After ... 1 1/2 cans of spray paint and a little cotton batting and fabric and a staple gun later ... I used Alexander Henry's Sunny Side fabric for the seat. I love the contrast of the red, black and white. Can you say oh yeah ??
