My Brother



Last night my brother, Andy, graduated from fire academy, along with 18 other men. We are so very proud of him. He was able to endure the 18-week-long academy, in bootcamp-like conditions.

Andy is 21 years old and first became interested in fire & rescue when he was young. (Our father is a retired firefighter.) Andy joined vo-tech in high school, where he was trained in fire and rescue, becoming an EMT at an early age. Andy has been a volunteer at his local fire department since high school. He has won many awards and offices because of his experience, including Firefighter of the Year.

On Thursday, Andy will start his first career firefighting. He will be working in a city (not a big city like Baltimore, luckily) on the ambulance. We are told that all new recruits are "stuck" there first.

Reusable Swiffer WetJet Cloths

I promised myself that, when I bought a box of Swiffer WetJet refills at the wholesale club, it would be the last box I bought. Something had to be done. Now, to be honest, part of the reason was to help the environment, but the other part was because I was tired of running out of those darn things. I took some towels, folded them in half cut them into 5" widths. (The towel was just about 25" or so from side to side when flat.) Then I cut two 5" pieces of elastic and serged it all together. Two layers of toweling and two elastic strips. That's it. (The finished piece was approximately 4.75" x 12.") Within minutes I had a stack of eight. Slide them on and mop away. You will have a clean floor and have saved one more thing from ending up in the landfill. Now, if I can just do something about the cleaning liquid ... Something environmentally-friendly, economical, and won't cause further pain to my arthritic back.

Thrifted Chair

Before ... a $10 thrifted chair ... After ... 1 1/2 cans of spray paint and a little cotton batting and fabric and a staple gun later ... I used Alexander Henry's Sunny Side fabric for the seat. I love the contrast of the red, black and white. Can you say oh yeah ??
