A New Addition to the Family

Shortly after yesterday morning's second breakfast we welcomed a new arrival in our home. A serger. As I pulled it out of the box, Spenser and Sawyer were just as amazed as I was. They wanted to poke it and touch it (as if it were really a baby).

I have been considering buying one for over a year and finally took the plunge. I know nothing about sergers. Nothing. At. All.

I don't know how many threads to use. I don't know what setting to use. I don't think the tension is correct, but I don't know. And I don't want to fiddle with the tension. I don't know when to serge. Or when not to serge. To serge or not to serge. That is the question.

The threading was pretty easy. Believe it or not. I've heard nightmares about that. And it even comes with a pair of tweezers for fingers that don't like to grab small threads. Like mine.

After the threading, it only seemed natural to take it for a spin ...

Voila! PJ bottoms using the strawberry sheet.

You'll be the "Serging Queen" in NO time, I have no doubt about that!

Cute cute pants too. I love how you used the edge of the sheet for the cuff!

I Love your strawberry creations!
I was given a serger like 5 years ago, I still haven't tried it! It scares me! Once again I will be looking to you as inspiration! Maybe I will dig it out, if I do be expecting LOTS of questions ;)

Wow, any more of the strawberry sheet left?!

I bought one at a garage sale this weekend, but no manual, so I am jealous that you are driving yours already!

don't be afraid of the tension. you have to change it sometimes. just read the whole manual through and sit with some scraps and try sewing some of the scraps after messing with each dial as you read about it so you can see for yourself what each one does.

Wow, you used it already! I'm impressed!!

Cute pj pants. And even cuter serger. I can be of no help. I know nothing. But I have always thought it would be fun to make cloth napkins with a serger. No hemming! Good luck.

Holy moly, girl. I would have opened the box and quaked in fear. Those things scare me! and look what you did.

I think you might be a superhero.

Great strawberry pants! I'm so amazed. You'll learn the serger in no time at all. My mother gave me her older serger and I stared at it for about a year before I had the nerve to try it out. It's an old one and a pain to thread, but I really like it now.

That is so cool! I don't know the first thing about sergers either, but I think you can now make things with knits? If so, that will really add to the clothes you can make!

you will LOVE your serger, I bet. After I first used one (scared to death the thing would come unthreaded) I don't know how I lived without. Saved my pennies for one a few years back. I haven't ditched my straight stitch machine, but am so happy to have both.

Viola is right! I'm sure you'll love it. I love mine, after sewing for years without one. Now I can may "professional" looking stuff!

I've been reading your blog for a while now. You are an excellent seamstress! I admire your work and I'm inspired by all the things you're able to accomplish in a single day. How do you do it? I only have two children and find it difficult to squeeze my sewing in! :) Love the strawberry sheet!

PS -I found lots of books on sergers/serging at our local library. They were very helpful and included projects. But it doesn't look like you're having any trouble!
Congrats on the new machine and using it already! I know you are going to love it. It makes everything so much more nicer.

Hey congratulations! For sewing clothes, a serger can't be beat! I can't believe you didn't have one yet, with all the sewing you do.
Oh you are too cute! And so are those pants!!

I too have been considering a serger even though I don't know when I should/shouldn't use one too. I can't wait to see when you use it and how you like using it.

Have fun with the new family baby!

I was thrilled to see that batman lives at your house, too. Batman went to the park out here yesterday.
Every day since Oct. 1.
God bless batman.
ps -- congrats on the new acquisition. New or used? How did you know what to buy?

congratulations! I've been starting to wonder about getting a serger - would I really sew more clothing?

Oh lucky you! I would love a serger, but I know nothing about them really... :) (I am amazed that you already managed to use it though!)
Cute pj pants!

You are going to looooove having a serger. Just keep the manual right next to you while you're getting used to it (and keep it in arms reach after that).

haha! really, its great. and you thought you could sew fast before. i love mine. and its so easy, really!

Tip for threading your serger! Yes Lera, I have one too.... only I don't think it will recognise me...... LOL

Just remember to join end of old spool of thread to beginning of new spool of thread and it will automatically run on as usual.

Join with a knot!

But I am sure you knew that!

Ooooooh...we will be dying to hear how you do with it! The pajama pants are awesome! I admire your 'just do it' approach! You're my hero! :-)
