Same but Different

I'm totally getting my money's worth out of the $1.99 Simplicity 3835 pattern. Lately I've been contemplating making the tunic (mini dress), but couldn't decide which fabric to use. Vintage? Modern? One day I spied this vintage sheet in my stash and knew it was "the one." I thrifted it almost two years ago and was waiting for the "perfect" reason to cut it up.

The pattern was a little more time-consuming and fiddly than the shirt. It involves a zipper and a neckband and facing. I handstitched the facing down because I couldn't figure out what the pattern was talking about and I just wanted it to be finished.

It's okay. I don't know if I am "in love" with it. The neck area is a little close to my neck and throat and it verges on making me feel a teensy bit claustrophobic. And I wonder if I shouldn't have used/"wasted" the sheet on this project. Live and learn, my friends. Live and learn.

In other happy news, look what arrived in the mail yesterday. All the way from sunny California. Jessica (a.k.a. Finny) sent me some dotty love. It's perfect and I can't wait to use it. Thanks, again, Jessica. You know how to make a girl happy.

I finally bought that pattern! I was wondering how that mini dress would look. I really like yours, but I can see what you mean about the high neck. Cute though!
I have been wanting to sew that dress too. I think it looks great on you.

I think that the tunic looks great! I can see though that the neck would be a little uncomfy.

Can you wear it???

And....cute dots.

ok, you must be a little too closely involved in that little dress to be objective about it. I can't tell you just how absolutely fabulous it looks on you. it is seriously really really great. seriously.

Great fabric! I agree that the neck looks a little bit uncomfortable. Could you redo the neck more like the blouse? I think you would enjoy it more. Really cute, though!

Well I think it is very pretty, but the neck would bother me enough to not wear it. I wonder if you could alter it somehow even now.

It looks great!

No no no... it's not a waste. Are you kidding?!?!?! This is great. Particularly for your figure. My goodness, I would look like I was wearing a 4-man tent if I made a tunic. I know you're hating the neck right now, but don't forget how you originally felt about the sleeves on one of your first versions of the pattern. now you love them!
Plus, if the neck were bigger it would verge on moo-moo housecoat for old ladies. Make that scary lunch ladies.
As is, it's wonderful.

I love the creative way you use sheets. I just hadn't thought of them as "fabric to be hoarded" somehow. Why does my brain compartmentalise? The pink and green set is wonderful. One of my favourite marbles as a kid was a milky dob in those colours. I love linen -it always looks so classy.

That looks great on you! I think the fabric suits the pattern perfectly too. I know what you mean about the neck though (I get kind of claustrophobic that way too), that's why I like v-necks. I wonder if you could make it the same but put a little v-slash thingy in the collar?

the tunic is great! I love love that you use thrifted sheets. It won't be long until I can sew things from actual patterns! We are making pj pants in my class right now...thanks for being my sewing inspiration.

I like the necklace with the tunic. It adds a bit O mod to the look.

The fit is fantastic. Shirts scare me. How do you fit them so well? Do you have one of those dress forms?

Yeah, I'm still on the fence about my recent tunic excursion.

I will say that yours does look really cute though - but I'd be biggigity about the neckline, too. That stuff bugs me once it's on.

Hope you enjoy the dots!
