The One About Aprons

I love aprons. And I love finding handmade vintage aprons while I'm thrifting. I squeal with glee when I find one. Seriously. I thought I would share some of the aprons I have found within the past few months.

The floral one on the left was found at a thrift store about two months ago or so. It's thinning from use, but the colors are still just wonderful and fun.

The food one on the left was picked up at a rummage sale last week. It has all kinds of produce on it. It has some stains on it that didn't come out at, so it's going to need a little more work. (Sarah always gives helpful hints on her blog for cleaning vintage finds. And go wish her a happy birthday while you're there. She's having some cool giveaways this week.)

This apron wasn't in the best of shape, but I bought it anyway. I thought I can repair it and also trace the pattern, if I am so adventurous.

But this apron is my favorite find. It, too, is in need of repair, but I am already trying to make one of my own.

This one, honestly, I didn't love. It is made of linen with all of this amazing embroidery. I felt bad leaving it behind when I found it thrifting recently. And when it rang up for less than 40 cents, I realized it was an inexpensive addition to my growing collection.

Now this is not an apron. Or it wasn't at the time of purchase. It was a vintage kitchen curtain panel which I repurposed and ...
made into an apron for my mother for Mother's Day. I used some vintage green gingham for the tie and there it is ... an apron.

That's quite a collection!

I think you should try to re-create that vintage apron.

Really? I LOVE that linen one - you know me and embroidery. And it looks like it has the perfect pockets for holding clothes pins.

A wonderful collection, my dear. My favorite apron was my grandma's - it is covered with birds and red rick rack.

Your aprons are lovely! I never really though about using an apron, but looking back I can see how they can be very useful. (especially when feeding an 8 month old)

blogger ate my comment so the shorter version. love your collection. i love the blue one. i especially like how they don't go around the neck - i hate the weight of an apron - any kind - when they wrap around the back of my neck.

i never have any luck finding aprons. i must need to dig harder.
The one you didn't like so much - I think is my favourite. I love linen and the blue embroidery is beautiful. Great idea making that apron out of the curtain panel!

Gorgeous! Especially blowing in the suny breeze on a clothes line...nice work! I have to say that the linen apron with embroidery is my fave of the bunch.

Okay, at the risk of sounding like everyone else, I must say I love the linen apron with blue emboidery! My kitchen has lots of cobalt blue, so I can just see myself wearing it. I'm actually considering making one similar to it now that you showed it off - thanks!
Ooooh fun! I love your finds and can't wait to see your creation using the vintage apron as your pattern!

You always find the best goodies when thrifting. You either live near better thrift shops or I am not doing a good job at learning to thrift. Hmmm....
OK, I'll admit it, I love the linen one.

I also collect vintage aprons, started in my teens (can we say weird?). Now I own most of my grandmothers' as well as some found while thrifting.

Maybe you have already seen these patterns (http://www.thecalicocat.com/patterns-apron.htm), maybe not. I have a rough time tracing patterns from existing items sometimes and thought maybe having access to a pattern ready to go might free up a little more evening sewing.
