The Skirt

to go with the boots.

I've been wanting a new winter skirt to go with my new birthday boots. I bought some charcoal gray checked corduroy a while back, but didn't have time to sew the skirt. My first priority was Halloween. And then Spenser's birthday party. And a few other things in there. Including not wanting to sew anything after Matt and Caitlin's accident.

Saturday (our first soccer-free Saturday in months) was the day. It was rainy, which gave me the perfect excuse to sew while Joe and the boys watched movies.

The "pattern" is from Sew What! Skirts. It's the fitted A-line with a side zipper.

(I added three vintage buttons in front of the side zipper.)

While I really, really, really love this skirt and it turned out almost exactly as I imagined it, it's too big. Even with a few alterations to the skirt, I still didn't take enough in. It's not the book's fault. It's mine. I've made the wrap skirt from the book several times in the past and had my measurements written down, I took the lazy route and didn't measure myself again. I'm hoping it's because I've been running and slimming down, but I just don't know. Maybe when I made the wrap skirt I had big breakfast and/or lunch.

I still wore it to church, but it fit so low on my hips that it was a little uncomfortable. I can almost take the skirt off without pulling down the zipper. I don't know if I'll just live with it as it is, take it apart and make it smaller, or make a new one. It cost less than $9 to make it. The corduroy was half-price, I had the zipper and buttons.

* * * Things to remember and ponder: * * *

Taylor brought home his first report card from middle school. He made the Honor Roll, even with taking all accelerated classes. The school is holding a reception on Friday morning for all Honor Roll students. Woo-hoo, Taylor! Although I'm not surprised, Mr. Smarty Pants.

Yesterday at church, Caitlin's father shared a poem with me that he wrote for her private graveside service. It was a beautiful tribute in honor of Caitlin's life and her many wonderful attributes. I have pondered his words all night. It was so beautifully written. And it just described all of Caitlin's wonderful qualities. It just makes me want to write something about each of my children now. Maybe for their birthdays. And maybe add to it every year.

Great skirt, Lera! Too bad is doesn't fit right. That is my biggest frustration with making clothes--I always have to fix something or start over!

The skirt looks great. I love what you did with the buttons. Perfect for the boots. Bummer about the sizing though. I tend to make things too big for myself, too.

Lera - just a comment on your last comment. Recently a member of our congregation passed away. Someone who everyone loves, but he was also a great role model for my hubby when he was growing up. He has seven children, 5 of whom are married. He was 58 and it was very unexpected. At his funeral his son read a letter that he had written to his children about 7 years previously. It was beautiful and so perfect, something his children will always have to cherish. The gist of the letter was that it doesn't matter what you have in this life, it is who you serve, who and how you love etc. It was an amazing letter and I hope to write some letters for my children soon too.

Yay for Taylor! I am still trying to figure out how you are so slim after having six kids...something I'll never understand! I think the skirt looks great. I bought that book on your recommendation, but I haven't even read it yet (I think I bought it last year)..another thing on my to do list, I guess!

When I was pregnant with each of the boys, I started a journal to them. My goal was to write in it periodically and give them the journal on their 18th birthdays. The journals got packed up in our last move and I haven't dug them out yet...maybe now is the time to do so. (((HUGS)))

That is a great looking skirt. Such style!

Glad to hear you're still running. I'll assume that means your knees are feeling better, which is excellent.

Cheers~

I love the way the skirt looks - frustrating when it doesn't fit though. I love the 'cardie' with it too. :)

What a wonderful idea to write something about your children. And then to hook it up with birthdays which means it gets updated annually. Brilliant idea!
