Modern Pioneer?

So we're riding around in the car last week, while geocaching. The kids are in the back watching Where the Red Fern Grows (courtesy of Netfix) and I keep thinking about the mother's dress in the movie. Now, the movie takes place during the Depression, if I remember correctly, so it's not "pioneer" times, but still.

So, anyway, I'm thinking about her dress and looking at the bland, dead, wintry landscape (it was overcast and ugly that day, too) and I decided I should make a dress just like the mother's, inspired by the great outdoors. Except, when I got home, I realized I don't have any patterns like that. And there wasn't enough of the vintage brown floral fabric I wanted to use, that reminded me of the brown landscape. I dug through my vintage fabric jackpot and found this red calico:

Or maybe it's deep orange. I can't really tell.

The dress itself is another Simplicity 3835. It had been awhile since I last made one. I used the shirt style dress with the elastic neck. Added the darts in the back. Cut the back in one piece (on the fold). Just like in the past, but for this winter dress, I chose the longer sleeve, no elastic/no tie option.

I can't tell if it's rockin' or if I'm losing my mind... I guess if I wear it to church and the girls hate it, I'll know.

Oh Lera, I love it. Isn't it amazing how many options you have with one pattern? I am inspired to make me one.

Haha...it took me a while to figure out that the picture at the top is YOU and not the "muse" dress. You're just too talented!

Personally I think its Rockin'. I infact bought 3 new fabrics to make 3 of the very same dresses out of. I hadn't thought of the longer sleeves though... hmm.

I love it. So are you using the dress pattern too or just lengthening the shirt? I'd love to try it, but the dress pattern scares me.

Rocks.

It looks like there is a wide bias ruffle on the bottom in the photo, but I guess that could just be the wind. Or is it?

I've been missing your 3835 creations, L.

It is hard for me to describe how much I love that dress.

The pattern is perfect - flattering, practical, throw-backish. The fabric is nostalgic enough without being cutesy and I'm choosing to think it's orange because that's my favorite color.

That outfit is downright adorable.

Amazing work, as always.

I've generally found that the ones I feel most "on the fence" about are the ones that work the best. I personally think it looks great!

Love it! I've been inspired, by you, to purchase the pattern and hope that I can make something wearable from it for the spring. When I jump in, I'll let you know :)
