Halloween Costumes

Sawyer, The Skunk.

I took the easy route for Sawyer and bought him a skunk costume from Old Navy. I thought about making it, but knew I would not have time. It was on sale for $15, so I probably couldn't have made it much cheaper.

Store-bought or handmade. He's stinkin' cute.

Spenser, The Ballerina.

I made the tutu and leg warmers. I bought the long-sleeved leotard and opaque tights. She wore her hair in a bun. Too sweet.

Mason, The Gorilla.

I wanted to die when Mason announced he wanted to be a gorilla for Halloween. I honestly tried to change his mind. When he wouldn't have it, I agreed. I used Simplicity 2855. If I ever made it again, I'd buy a longer zipper and place it in the back. And then I'd leave the padded, pleather stomach as one piece.

Joe made a mask for Mason out of the leftover pleather. It didn't stay on so well, so halfway through trick or treating, it went into his bag.

Jackson, Fancy Pants.

What can I say? I made the orange bell-bottoms, bought a long-sleeved black shirt, and Joe made a mohawk out of two white chair pads. Joe designed it and sewed it.

Only a few passing kids knew who he was ...

Carter, The Pirate.

I made the vest out of some vintage red and white fabric. He wore a long-sleeved white tee with some ruffly, elastic cuffs that I made. A black scarf on his head. A hoop earring and an eye patch.

The cuff.

(Taylor stayed at home and gave out candy.)

So cute! I really like the Fancy Pants costume! It's rare to see a truly original costume. Great job on the gorilla suit!

ah, they're all sooooooooo cute. I can't believe you made that gorilla costume. That was a major feat!

I love the skunk too. Isaiah wore a monkey costume from ON too, but I got it at the thrift store. I won't even tell you how much I paid for it ;)

Those turned out fantastic, Lera. I thought about Mason's gorilla costume all weekend. I knew you'd come up with something wonderful. :)

Secretly, I'm a little jealous. My kids didn't request any new costumes this year. It felt so weird not sewing anything!

I love the gorilla!

I bought Noah's costume because I hardly ever have time to sew. I'm determined to make his costume next year!

Truly amazing that you made so many costumes. That pirate vest is the perfect accessory for insta-pirate! And the cuffs! They all look so sweet. You may now rest your costume skills for 11 months :)

WOW BUSY!

All the costumes are adorable, of course - but I'm a sucker for striped leggings - that's a great ballerina costume :)

That skunk is stinkin' cute, the ballerina too-too much and the rest of the group is fab, too.

Happy halloween!

wow.

How did you make leg warmers? With a knit? Did you use a pattern?

I hope to sew like you by the time I am 60. I have 30 years to practice. I want to be able to say "I whipped up a bunting."
