I Never Want to Forget ...

how my eldest comes in to my room in the quiet of the morning to snuggle in bed with me until my alarm goes off. He gets up early to eat breakfast alone (his preference) and then comes to my room. He slides into my bed and cuddles right up next to me. Most days I'm lucky to get nothing more than a "side" hug from him. But in the morning it's different. And sweet. It's only on school mornings. And I get a kiss from him before he leaves.

This morning was different.

At 12:30 a.m., my bedroom door opened. I was startled and begun, "Shhhhhhhhhh," so he wouldn't wake the smaller kids in the adjacent bedroom. I asked him what he needed. He said he just ate breakfast. You just ate breakfast? ::looking at clock again:: He tried to tell me it was 7:00 a.m. ::looking at clock again:: ::looking towards window (it's still dark):: He said his alarm clock had gone off, saying it was 6:00 a.m. and so he went downstairs and ate breakfast.

I finally convinced him that it was only 12:30, and that he could get in bed with me if he wanted (Joe is out of town).

As I slept, I wondered if he was sleepwalking. Or confused. Or if the power surge earlier in the night had messed with his clock settings. When the "real" morning approached, I asked him if needed breakfast again. He declined, at first. (I was still wondering what actually happened. Did he imagine eating breakfast? Was he dreaming? Did he even look at the clock in the kitchen? Did the neighbors think we were weird?)

When I opened my bedroom door, I heard his alarm clock beeping. He went in to check and it was set to the proper time. When I went into the kitchen, I noticed his cereal bowl in the sink.

While it is still a mystery to me, I will appreciate the extra time I had to cuddle with him. I know that one day soon it will end. Maybe this will be his last year. He starts middle school next fall and he might realize that it's uncool to snuggle with your mom. I hope it's not the case, but I'm prepared for it. I'll just appreciate the moments that I have with him now. And I hope I never forget it.

That's the sweetest thing. Mysterious story, but sweet.

So funny. Erik never has concept of time. He'll wake up (not very often) in the middle of the night and wonder why everyone else is sleeping.

Wierd things happen in the dream state, eh?

It's sweet that he still wants to cuddle though.

I often wonder, as I snuggle with my sweet boy, how many more I have in store for me - and it makes me treasure each little bit of love even more.

my oldest is usually too cool for mom, but she does the same thing and when it comes down to it, she neds it more than the others. for all of her independence she seeks my approval and love and affection more. how sweet.

griffin will snuggle me at the end of the day. we talk about how he'll always be my baby and it will always be nice to snuggle me a little, even when he's married and has his own kids.

for now he's going with it.

How strange! Very funny though. Autumn does weird things in the middle of the night too. She'll just sit up in bed and look around and start talking, but I'm almost sure she's actually still asleep.

That's so sweet Lera. I love snuggling with my kiddos in bed. Right now Alex is the only one who does it.
I started smiling when I read about him eating breakfast at 12.30 but I ended up with tears in my eyes at the end of your story. It is so sweet that he wants to cuddle.

My son climbs into my bed in the mornings too and I love it. Who knows when he might decide that it is uncool to snuggle up to Mum.

What a lovely story. As a mom of four grown kids I encourage you to hold onto those moments tightly, as I see you do. When my oldest was a teen I would go into his room and sit on his bed and have chats, that too was special.

I remember once, in high school, waking up and getting in the shower. My mom came in after about 5 minutes asking me what in the world I was doing. "Um, getting ready for school."

It was only 1 am. I swear I'd heard my alarm go off. If you crawl out of bed, half asleep, it's kind of easy to do.

But, how sweet that you got the extra cuddle time.

this past weekend I was sick and my boy told his dad and brother "I'm gonna go check on mom." those melt your heart moments are the best!
