A Little Paint Goes A Long Way

On Friday we slipped into the Swap Shop at our local landfill. I found these two, inexpensive silver-plated dishes (for free). Pretty unimpressive as is, but, when cheap, silver dishes + Lera + spray paint are mixed together ...

things that were previously old, plain, ordinary, and boring are given a new life. I used Krylon Indoor/Outdoor spray paint in Cherry Red and Celery in gloss.

And it looks even more impressive with pound cake on top.

Edited to add: I am not sure if spray paint is "food safe" as far as painting for everyday use, including knife use. The pieces that I have painted are going to be used as serving pieces, not eating-off-of pieces. I would think the food would be as safe on these pieces as they would sitting a cookie, M&Ms, etc., on top of a painted piece of furniture or chair and then eating it. As long as you aren't scraping up paint with a fork, knife, fingernail, etc., it should be safe. That's just my opinion, though.

What a clever gal you are! Those are so pretty! I never would have thought of that but now that you have, I think I'll copy (it is a form of flattery, I hear). By the way, you mentioned wanting some pink daisy pyrex. There were several pieces on ebay yesterday and they were reasonably priced. Have you checked there?

Those look awesome! I've been thinking about changing the metal frame on my daughter's bed ... this makes it look a lot easier than I thought it would be.

Hi, Lera - you have such great ideas. I linked to your last-minute gift - little apron post on my blog today. (Maybe I should have asked first??? I just loved it so much.) By all means, let me know if that's NOT okay! Barbara

Ooo la Lera you're hired! I'm in between coats on a thrifted table. I may end up trying spray paint as the brush keeps leaving trail marks. That'll teach me to buy cheap brushes . :-)

I have a three tiered candy dish I want to do this to, but I haven’t decided what color. Hosta green glossy or ballet pink slipper matte. Would you use matte?

You gave those old silver dishes brand new life. They look great! Thanks for the inspiration/reminder to change any metals that we don't like by using a little spray paint. Well done.

This is so cool!!!!

When you spray items with krylon like this on dishes do you have to be careful it doesnt chip off? or in the food? I always wonder about spraying dishes such as this and how it works with having food on it / toxic precautions? Do you know? Because this is a killer idea!!! LOVE IT

i'm not normally paranoid - but did you make sure krylon is food safe? i love the red one. your paint is so even - i somehow make spray marks. what's your secret?

fabulous! I am so bummed, though- I JUST put some silver dishes in the goodwill box a few days ago because they just didn't fit in... I had no idea I could paint them!

Now I have to go back to the goodwill and see how much I can buy them back for, because I can just see them barn red in my kitchen. Is that crazy?
