Ode to Candy Corn

Candy corn.

You are evil. You are not good for my waistline. It's not October yet, so I refuse to buy you. And when I do. Look out. I will eat you by the handfuls. And I might even buy your friends, the pumpkins.

But, since it's still September, I will just take the calorie-free approach and sew a tote. One that both honors you and reminds me to stay away from you.

And I won't play any tricks on anyone by biting off your white tip and pretending to have lost a tooth. I remember that day when I was a kid and did that to my mother. I felt instantly bad that I was deceiving her and 'fessed up. I really wasn't going to stick you under my pillow for the tooth fairy. Instead, I gobbled you right up.

And the truth is, I'm not even sure if I like you. I'm not sure if I like how you taste. You're awfully sweet, and I don't like very sweet things. I think you remind me of autumn. And of playing football and kickball in the backyard. And coughing when the cold air got into my lungs. You're a childhood memory. One that I hope to pass onto my children. And who knows, they might like you more than I do. Until then ... I'll see you on Wednesday. That's October 1st, you know.

~Lera

Update: The bank robber and giant spider are still at large. My smart friend thinks the police were smelling the suspect's hand because the robber wore gloves. If they were latex, the smell would be obvious. Someone else suggested an odor on the money or dye-pack. Also, word is he only got away with $2,600.

Sawyer had a fun birthday (that Joe missed). Thanks for all of your birthday wishes!

Oh, and speaking of teeth, this morning I walked into Taylor's room to make sure he was awake. He was sitting on his bed playing on the laptop. As I sat down next to him, I noticed a little something on the bed. I picked it up and asked, "What's this?" He replied, "A tooth." Surely, it was. He lost a tooth and it was sitting on the bed next to him. Ewwwww.

Have a great weekend.

That is one cute tote!
We have a few candy corn addicts at our house. Craig is the worst! He buys it by the truck load and eats it continuously until it no longer can be found. Then, he patiently waits until the candy hearts come out in February.

I also loved your post on that sweet and adorable little Sawyer. Happy Birhday to him!!

Have a great weekend!

I love the bag...so cute!

Try mixing candy corn with cocktail peanuts (salted) in a bowl. If you get a little of both, it tastes just like a payday bar (but better)! One of my favorite snacks, but very addicting...so watch out!

That tote is fantabulous! And not to be an enabler or anything, but I'm with jen on the candy corn/peanut combo. Delicious.

What a great bag! It's certainly a low-calorie alternative. I've eyeballed the candy corn on the store shelves too. It took EVERY ounce of restraint to not dump 12 bags into my cart. I may see you wednesday morning as I stand, drooling, outside the store waiting for them to open...

Love the tote...I'm not too keen on the candy.

Anything you sew seems to be great..you should really start you a little store to sell these cute items.

Too funny! You are right Candy Corn is EVIL!!! It is too sweet and doesn't really taste of anything...But it is a childhood memory, so there is no avoiding it....:)
We don't have Candy Corn here but I think I remember it has something to do with Halloween?

I really shouldn't say this but I used to have a fastination with my tooth, those that fell out that is. I would look at them, and look at them some more and then keep them in a bottle. After I had washed them throughly of course.

Hi Lera, I was wondering about the dye espect of the stolen money.

Would you believe we don't have candy corn in the UK?! Instead children get a Haribo sort of mix usually or what were known as "penny sweets" when I was little. Trick or treating is becoming more popular here which is lovely for the children.

oh, I must make one of those bags! I LOVE IT!!!! I saw candy corn mixed with peanuts at the store last week. I almost broke down and bought it because I believe that it would be a perfect match...sweet and salty. mmmm. this is such a cute post.

Oh my...this post made me laugh! That's a super cute tote, too! I think I feel the same way about the candy corn...I always buy it and seem to look forward to it, but I'm not really certain that I really like it because it is insanely sweet! Too Funny....now I can't wait to get some at the store this week, lol! Glad to have found your blog :)

CUTE BAG! I am here because Amandajean linked your blog (and tote). I love candy corn and the pumpkins (already have gone thru one bag of the CC). I don't like Brach's though. Has to be a no name brand. The tote would be better for me though.
That's the cutest bag I've ever seen!

Oh how funny! Candy corn has been my breakfast everyday for the last week. They are so yummy!I will be glad when they are gone though. It is so tempting.
I have the same problem with candy corn!!! I finally had to put mine in the bottom of a glass jar and put an orange candle on top just so I wouldn't reach in the jar and eat them!

I love the bag. :)
