Doing My Part

I admit, I use paper or plastic.

Go ahead. Hate me. Call me a polar-bear killer. Whatever you want. It's probably well deserved.

It's not that I didn't want to use cloth, it's more like, I want a bag that will be strong and actually be able to carry stuff for a family of eight. Not a wimpy bag.

When I recently bought some canvas bags, my mind started swirling. These bags would be heavy-duty enough for my needs. But, they were ugly. And plain. Then Christmas came and I really didn't have time to think about it anymore, so I pushed it aside. Until a trip to the store left me with a wad of plastic bags.

It was time.

I bought some canvas bags and personalized them with appliques. Some with L's. Some with fruit. Simple. Pretty. And quick.

Since most of my shopping is done at the wholesale club (without bags), these will be for my trips to Walmart (don't criticize me -- I have a large family to take care of), Target, and my once-a-month-or-less trip to the actual grocery store. I think they'll be just fine.

Please...I bet there are more people unwilling to admit they use plastic as well. You are trying and that is all that matters!

I love your new "green" bags!

Great bags - I love the cherries! I have a stash of bags, but I am forever forgetting to bring them with me. I don't feel too terrible about it though - we do re-use our bags as trash bags in our smaller garbage cans.

I have to admit to being a Wal-Mart shopper too - we only have Wal-Mart or way more expensive alternatives here (our closest Target is an hour away), so it's sort of a necessity. Plus, they have the least expensive ribbons, bias tape, trims, interfacing, etc...I have to admit to getting a fair bit of my sewing supplies there too!

The bags do work great, but like Jessi it works better if they're actually in the car with you!

I, too, confess to getting as many of my sewing supplies as possible at Walmart. We only have a Jo-Ann's and their selection can be pretty bleak sometimes.

Those bags are awesome!

I'm a walmart shopper too honey, so don't worry! Sometimes you just have to shop smart, and walmart does have some good items at good prices.

The bags are adorable!!!

My Costcp sells groocery bags, about $1 a bag, and they;re AWESOME. Big enough to hold four gallons of milk...but I use mine to cart laundry around the house!

You can never have too many bags. Because half the time mine don't make it back into the car.
And Walmart is just one of those necessary evils. I don't want to shop there, but let's face it. It is the only place you can go when you need 12 items from groceries to hardware, and only have a half and hour to go to the store.
As for me, I'm off to the grocery store in about an hour.

Love the fabric you used in the L's.

I don't shop at Walmart, but only because there is not one near us. If there was one, I no doubt would shop there.

I am not perfect about remembering my cloth bags, but when I do, I am always so happy. It is much easier for me to carry multiple bags because I can sling some over my shoulder. Those are adorable. I love the apple/pair combo!

I have made grocery sacks for all my friends and family, yet, I still use plastic. I feel guilty.

I've just switched from plastic too. My bags aren't nearly so cute. If I saw you in my grocery store, I'd pull you aside and compliment you. Great work! So very cute!

I love these bags - so cute! You should sell them :) I just happened upon your blog, and I'll definitely be coming back to see what other great ideas you have! In the meantime, any advice for where to get the supplies to make them? I live in an area where fabric shops are scarce.

These are so much cuter than the neon green ones my husband and I have been picking up from the store. That apple and pear one is darling.

listen, polar bear killer, its okay.

i'm pretty sure you know where i stand on the issue of man made global warming - so i'll just say that i need to make a few of these just so that i don't have to deal with the myriads of plastic bags tumbling out of my laundry room...

Just do the best we can with regards to plastics. I am now down to 'none' to new plastic bags when I go marketing for perishables but of course I bring 'used' plastic bags along with my containers and green bags!

I am now trying very hard to say no to plastic bags while shopping at the malls! i.e. when I do have my tote bag with me! i.e. when they are not at home or in the car!

Your bags are adorable!

UHG! I love your bags and I'd love to use "green" shopping bags but I use the crappy plastic ones for garbage at home so if I didn't get them for free while shopping I'd have to buy them.
