Ribbon Outlet

On Friday I went to the ribbon outlet. Yes, there is such a thing. The last time I went I was pregnant with Sawyer.

They've changed things around in the past 4 1/2 years. They no longer sell ribbon by the (generous) yard. They only sell it by the spool now.

I went in for some brown ribbon. I couldn't decide between satin and grosgrain. Then, I saw some gray (satin and grosgrain) and decided I needed some of that, too. I mean, how could I resist? Especially when I saw the prices ...


$1.25 per spool. Four spools of gray (light and dark) and two spools of brown. My total bill was less than $8. And the spools are huge!

Anyone have suggestions for ribbon crafts? I'm thinking about ribbon flowers, although none of the ribbon I bought has wire. Oh, and some belts.

Oh my goodness, do they have Ribbon Outlets in the Midwest? I couldn't resist those prices either!! The one thing that comes to my mind for ribbons right now are those taggy toys for babies. And hair bows! have fun!!

I wove some ribbon and then cut out hearts for an applique quilt. They look great.

i still have some left from when we went way back when. I have mostly used it to embellish things like as a trim for pillowcases or dresses or skirts or as gift wrap.

Lera, that is an insane price for those spools. I am so jealous. How were you so good and only buy 6 spools. If it was me I would have been out of control.

I'm proud of the restraint you showed. For $1.25, I would have a whole closet of ribbon spools right now.

Terrifying. I think I'm glad there's not one nearby. That I'm aware of anyway.

That's an incredible deal! Good for you! I have no idea what to make of it, but I have seen one blogger who uses the wide grosgrain for the facing of waistbands.

I wish I lived near the ribbon outlet! I make and donate ribbons for dog shows, and ribbon at regular stores is expensive.

there is a french magazine that had a small bench which had a woven ribbon seat. It was fantastic. a friend of mine found an old metal stool in a thrift shop and made her own seat using mismatched ribbons. gorgeous! Marie Claire Idee is the magazine. comes out 3-4 times a year. i think they now have a web site. there instructions are sometimes complicated, and i speak french. but just for the inspiration it's worth finding it.

Reusable Swiffer WetJet Cloths

I promised myself that, when I bought a box of Swiffer WetJet refills at the wholesale club, it would be the last box I bought. Something had to be done. Now, to be honest, part of the reason was to help the environment, but the other part was because I was tired of running out of those darn things. I took some towels, folded them in half cut them into 5" widths. (The towel was just about 25" or so from side to side when flat.) Then I cut two 5" pieces of elastic and serged it all together. Two layers of toweling and two elastic strips. That's it. (The finished piece was approximately 4.75" x 12.") Within minutes I had a stack of eight. Slide them on and mop away. You will have a clean floor and have saved one more thing from ending up in the landfill. Now, if I can just do something about the cleaning liquid ... Something environmentally-friendly, economical, and won't cause further pain to my arthritic back.

Cloth Napkins

Happy Earth Day! Last year I made a bunch of cloth napkins using the rolled hem feature of my serger. And, while we used them a lot in the beginning, I kind of forgot about them and paper napkins crept back into our lives. (Although, I must admit that paper are better for cleaning up spilled lemonade and for packing in my boys' lunches. I'm afraid I'd never see them again if they were in a lunchbox.) I am trying to be more mindful of our waste. I find myself asking, "Can I reuse, reduce, recycle, or repurpose this?" about every thing. I recently discovered our town has a receptacle just for paper recycling. That makes me giddy. We get tons of papers from school, so now I can load it up and drop them off at town hall. So, in honor of Earth Day, I am giving away this set of six cloth napkins. They are made from thrifted, vintage (therefore repurposed) sheets that are leftovers from various projects.
