The Post about Pyrex

There has been a steady influx of vintage Pyrex over the past few weeks. Really, they are easy to spot and pretty affordable ($2-3 each). On one visit to the thrift store (I think to buy the chair), I found both of these. There was only one out at the time, but the girl was unloading a cart of stuff and found the other one for me.

And, I have a tip for you. Make nice with the thrift workers. This particular girl remembers me and my taste and actually called me over as she found the second casserole dish. And don't just be nice so you find good scores. It always pays to be nice. There are enough rude and obnoxious people out there. Don't be one of them. :-)

And then I really scored when I found this set. It wasn't even being sold as a set. The pieces were priced individually. I think I squealed in delight when I saw this baby. It includes a 9x13, 8x8 (or 9x9) and a loaf pan. In near perfect condition.

I always use my small Pyrex bowls for salads. The one on the right is tiny, but it would also be good for dips.

And this set is different. I found the larger bowl and two small bowls for $2 total at a flea market. I have never seen this shape before, but I have trained my eyes to notice the colors and glass thickness of Pyrex. Sometimes I am fooled and have to look at the bottom for the Pyrex imprint. In fact, I always check the bottom, just to be sure. I don't even know if this set only has two small bowls (as opposed to four) or if only two small bowls survived the owners.

I have my tomatoes in the big bowl now, but I think the small bowls would be good for dips and salsa. (Does it seem like I eat a lot of dip?)

And this was my latest acquisition. I don't love the pattern, but that doesn't matter. And I don't think the lid is the original, although it has the Pyrex imprint.

I honestly use my Pyrex on a daily basis. In fact, I have gotten rid of some of my newer stuff to accommodate my growing vintage Pyrex collection. I use them for storing leftovers (in a small effort to steer away from plastics), serving, reheating food, baking, and eating.

Other important Pyrex information: If you can find a lid for your Pyrex, great! If not, I have seen a few stray lids for sale in the thrift store. I picked up two about a week ago for very cheap. Just look for the Pyrex imprint on the handle.

Also, don't put your vintage Pyrex in the dishwasher. Wash them by hand. The dishwasher can ruin the finish on your bowls. Certainly not worth it in my book. Just be careful not to drop the soapy dish! They can be slippery when wet. Lots of information can be found here with pattern references, age, and care.

Girl, you are good. Love them. There is an antique mall in the Franklin and they are $12.99 to $50.00 on similar patterns.

ACK! Major Pyrex jealousy going on over here. The Crazy Daisy pattern is my favorite and has been since I was a little girl. My mom has one of the white on green mixing bowls and when I was about 8 I told her when I grew up it was MINE! Now she told me I have to wait until she dies. I've been gradually collecting pieces as I find them, but most of what I have now is the matching Corelle pieces and a creamer lol. AWESOME luck for you...those all rock!

I have one that has definitely lost its finish due to the dishwasher. Any hope? Is it safe?

I can appreciate you post today for 2 reasons:

1. Yes, there are too many rude and obnoxious people in the world and we should be nice not just to get us things but to make a difference.

AND

2. I have seen vintage Pyrex in my thrift stores and I would see it marked $2-3 and think, "Would Mrs. Pink Sky pay this much?"

Nice to hear that it is a good price.

Excellent post today!!

:-) I love that you are becoming a pyrex junkie. And that you see it't usefulness! Out with the plastic, in with the good stuff.

P.S. I see someone asking about one with a worn finish. It cannot be made good again, but they are still safe to use as far as I know.

(This is Sarah, btw, for some reason I cannot sign in? Grrrrrrr.)

I love the square bowls. Barbara at Oodles and Oodles has the red ones, she just found an entire set in the original box. Where do you ladies find the square ones? I haven't gotten 1 yet.

Omigosh, do I feel old. I have most of those pieces in my cupboard that I got as wedding gifts forty years ago. Most of the sets are intact, too. Wow!!

It's me again-I forgot to mention that I inherited a few of my Mom's pieces after she passed. I especially love the two clear straight-sided bowls. They're not big but are nice for serving dishes for my husband and myself. At Christmas, I put mixed in-the-shell nuts in the larger bowl just like Mom did. Makes Christmas without her a little nicer.

I agree! Being nice is the best policy.

I've been picking up some pyrex too... and it's just wonderful. I got a butterprint bowl with lid the other day and thought of you. :)

Always pays to be nice... always.

Great finds, Lera. I'm so happy you are getting them at good prices too! xoxo

What a haul you have amassed! I think we had one of those small lipped bowls when I was a kid - your tub of parkay fit in it perfectly.

And those squarish bowls - ::swoon::

And yes, nice is always nice, nasty will come back to bite you in the butt.

Have a great weekend!

Hi, Lera - I love your yellow bowls! Also love your advice about being nice - thrift store workers have tough enough jobs. Can't wait to read more of your blog.

You should be a professional thrifter!

Love it! Thanks for all the information. Hearing that dishwashers are a no-no steers me away because I'm a big, fat lazy housewife.

Hia Lera, love the vintage pyrex you found. Here in the UK it'shard to get in the charity shops and the new stuff is all clear glass in Woolworths. Good news is that you can buy Kilners Jars again as there is someone producing them from the original designs.

Ack! So cute! I have those yellow square ones too--but I have 4 small bowls. I guess that's how it came? I've used them for salads, dog dishes, everything! I'm just like you - gotta use the pyrex!

I am so jealous that you keep finding all this pyrex in your thift stores! I live in Texas and never find any! Oops, take that back, this weekend I stopped at the Hospice mart and found a little pyrex with the lid. The color is faded and worn off in some spots, and it is so little I have no idea what it is soppose to be used for. So, I decided to use it as a candy dish!

PS...I do read your blog daily, sorry for not commenting more. will try to start though...
