The Mind of a Crafter

On Saturday my good friend, Christy, moved to Utah. She has been trying to move there for over a year. She said she didn't like Maryland. (Honestly, I don't know why anyone wouldn't love Maryland! Can you imagine? Wait ... don't answer that.)

Anyway, I wanted to make something for her as a going-away gift. This is what goes on in the mind of a crafter (namely me):

"Hmmmm. Christy's moving. I should make her something. Okay. What? Hmmmm. Well, I've already made her a tote. Hmmmm. A bag? No, I already made her a bag. What am I going to make her? I've already given her a tissue pouch. And several bars of homemade soap. She doesn't need anything else to pack up. What can I make? What can I make? What can I make?!?! I'm not going to make her anything. She doesn't need anything. She's trying to pack and move. WHAT CAN I MAKE?! I wonder if she'd like a pencil roll. She likes to draw. I know! I got it!!!!! I'll make pencil rolls for her kids! What better gift for a friend than to try to keep her children occupied while driving across the country with four children?" (Of course this is a repeating conversation with myself over the course of a week or two.)

So ... here they are:

Four pencil rolls for her four children.
Made entirely from my stash (because, by the point I figured out what to make, it was the last minute and she was leaving the next day).

And I had a similar conversation with myself Wednesday/Thursday of last week when I was invited to a last-minute birthday get-together for my niece who was turning eight. I went the way of the birthday tote and dish towel apron.

And another similar conversation for a friend's birthday on Saturday. She got some Amy Butler note cards.

Honestly, Lera, you are soooo productive. If I make 1 pencil roll, I blog about it. Here you just whip out 4 like it's no big deal, and they're all so beautiful. Nice, nice gifts.

i know exactly why you would want to move away from maryland! i spent 5 years contemplating that thought! ;) but your town seems a lot cooler than where i lived (southern maryland - chuck (ahem) charles county).

love the rolls - great idea! i had the same thought process going on last night for a last minute wedding gift!

I love the pattern on the apron!
Gosh, how can you NOT like Maryland? Mts. on one end and the ocean on the other? Come on! ;)

Pencil rolls were a good idea. I recognize that apron fabric, I bought some of those towels myself, but haven't used them yet. Looks great as an apron!
And I'm sure I'd love Maryland if I ever got the chance to visit.

i love the way your mind thinks. :)you did a nice job on all the projects. nice use of the stash! this is, after all, why we have them, right? so we have any fabric we would need when the time comes...valuable, if you ask me!

Very cute! I wish I could put something like that together at the last minute!
You don't know how many times I have had the same conversation with myself! Too funny. I love the pencil rolls and the fabric combinations and the apron fabric is fantastic. You always amaze me at how much you get done.

Glad I'm not the only one who talks to myself and stays up late thinking of new craft projects!

I can hear that conversation. I have had very similar ones. Sometimes I have them aloud, and hubby wants to know if he should really answer me or make appropriate "I'm pretending to listen" noises.
